World Ocean Day is an international day that takes place annually on June 8th. Originally proposed by Canada's International Centre for Ocean Development and the Ocean Institute of Canada at the Earth Summit in 1992. Global coordination of World Ocean Day started in 2002 and has been recognized by the United Nations since 2008. The idea behind is to implement worldwide sustainable goals and foster public interest in the protection of the ocean and the sustainable management of its resources.

This year I was able to participate in a World Ocean Day event located on Miami Beach and sponsored by a local nonprofit organization called Blue Scholars Initiative. The day was filled with activities on the sand ranging from a beach cleanup to dune restoration, to a ceremonial paddle out and many more. With several informational tents set up to help bring awareness to the world's oceans. It was an excellent way to spend the day and get a better understanding of the issues that we all face and how we can make small changes to help protect what we love.
